Community Relations Resources

We at Toral, Garcia, Pineyro & Franz, Attorneys at Law, firmly believe that it is only through joint cooperation with healthcare providers and others that we can effectively represent persons who have suffered a serious injury and their families along the continuum of care; from the accident scene to a successful return to home, school or work. Our law firm is familiar with the complexity and multitude of family and legal issues involved in these serious cases. It is for this reason we have developed a Community Relations Department, which serves as a link between our firm, clients, family members and healthcare providers.

We invite you to explore below the list of nationwide resources gathered by our Office of Community Relations headed by Betty Paleolog-Torres.

As a native of Puerto Rico, Betty is fluent in both Spanish and English. She graduated from high school at the age of 16, went on to attend Broward Community College where she earned an Associate of Arts Degree and later graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Betty then specialized in the fields of Mental Health and Social Services and worked as a Youth Care Specialist at a shelter for troubled teens. In 1998, as a Targeted Case Manager for severely emotionally disturbed children, Betty began to notice a familiar pattern: many of the children with a mental health diagnosis also had underlying neurological issues as a result of chronic physical abuse, in-uterus exposure to drugs and alcohol or undiagnosed brain injuries secondary to falls or sports-related accidents.

Betty joined Florida Institute for Neurologic Rehabilitation (FINR) in 1999 as an Area Manager where, for the following six years, she assisted the Admissions Department to qualify and process referrals, provided educational and resource information to families and referral sources, coordinated clinical seminars for trauma hospitals, conducted educational in-services on the topic of brain and spinal cord injury for professionals in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities and represented FINR at professional conferences nationwide.

Since 1999, Betty has served as Sponsor Chair on the Brain Injury Association of Florida, Inc. (BIAF) Professional Conference Committee. She serves on the Board of Directors for Mothers Against Brain Injury, Inc and she is a member of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Pediatric Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program Advisory Board, as well as, BIAF’s Annual Fundraiser Committee (A Night in the Tropics).

In 2005, Betty joined Toral, Garcia, Pineyro & Franz, Attorneys at Law, where she coordinates Public Relations matters, including but not limited to, conference sponsorships, advertising, press releases and managing the firm’s website. Betty also serves as a liaison between the law firm, clients, their families and healthcare providers by guiding the firm’s clients who have suffered a brain and/or spinal cord injury through the continuum of care and linking them and their families to community programs when appropriate. Betty educates our clients and their families on organizations such as Brain Injury Association of Florida and state agencies such as Children's Medical Services and Brain & Spinal Cord Injury Program which provide helpful literature specific to brain & spinal cord injury, information on support groups and various family support services.

Betty serves as an advocate to our clients by ensuring appropriate rehabilitation services are being provided. She also facilitates communication between our clients, their families and medical providers which often take the form of case management meetings where referrals to rehabilitation providers and discharge planning options are discussed. She serves as a Spanish translator for families when meeting with physicians, nurses and rehabilitation providers and transports them to necessary outpatient medical appointments until the client can be linked to permanent community transit.
